The XJ 13 prototype was built to explore the idea of returning to LeMans. The project was shelved in the '60s and the car was stored. When Jaguar was introducing their V12 in the E type, they trotted out the old prototype and had their test driver do some hot laps at MIRA . Depending on who you read, either a Tyre failed or the magnesium wheels had aged to the point where one of them failed and the car was totaled. (The driver, Mr. Lewis was bruised but otherwise unhurt and was at work the next day). The wreck went back into storage and was rebuilt years later.
Although it was fast, I think it would have suffered the same problem as the early 917s and GT 40s in that the quest for a slippery shape led to instability at high speed. Driving that car down the Mulsanne straight in the old days would give you goosebumps for more than one reason.
