Sorry for the car, but it looks like that was a self inflicted wound. It's too high up for most bumpers on cars nowadays and it looks like a right turn mishap. The major damage starts before the door handle and lessens after.
No matter how it happened, tell her she's responsible for the repairs. Like you said it's a life lesson.
