I wish I could dig up the article (I think Daniel Stern wrote it) where it described that the engineering of the H4's was such that it expected a filament of a particular size, length and pattern at just the right focal point - and anything else just started to spray photons all over the place and cluttering up the lighting pattern.
I once had 100w H4's and I found them very disappointing, ran them for a while and went back to the 60w bulbs. My thought was the 100 watt filament was in the wrong place/wrong size and it was just creating glare rather than more photons at the specific focal point.
So...unless the LED's - are in the correct spot, you may in fact end up with an inferior lighting system to save a few amps of current.
On my car, I have LED's pretty well everywhere except the headlights....all them other bulbs will have to do the power saving, leaving lots of alternator input for my headlights.

I totally agree with the concern here. I actually tried an earlier generation of drop-in H4 LED replacement bulbs and very shortly took them back out. The pattern is very dependent on emitter position and size, and in addition to placement, the color temp on most LEDs are too high causing additional glade.
I am only hoping that since Porsche has certified their new LED bulbs and they appear to be MOT approved, that they finally have the optics to an acceptable state for use in Euro H4 housings.

P.S. unfortunately the WSJ requires a subscription so I can't actually get to the article.
