I loved driving my 987.1 Boxster. It was a Tip, so it was easy for anyone to drive. I think the base 987.1 had about the same hp as a 986 S. It was a blast to drive as I could actually wind out the motor without hitting triple digit speeds. I did wish the Tip had another gear.
If you like top down driving it is fantastic! If not, get a Cayman. You will not regret it.
