I would expect just about anything electronic that also has a date to know the month and year, so I probably don't ever have to set the date unless said electronic item's electrons get lazy and stop moving around.
I do have a mechanical watch that is not so high end that it has a perpetual calendar, so I do have to update the date function several times per year. I love it. It was a gift, and the engineering is very cool, to me, so I wear it every day.
