I went to a very good private high school in Atlanta and there were plenty of kids who got new cars (Some Accords, some BMW 3-series) when they turned 16 (this was in the early 90s). But the most interesting cars to me belonged to faculty. One of my English teachers drove an E12 530i in copper with a bunch of modifications on it that I just loved. Two teachers that were a married couple (she was one of my art teachers) drove a lime green Karmann-Ghia and a red VW bus. The one student car that was truly interesting was the classmate of mine who sometimes drove his dad’s BMW Bavaria. That was the source of my love for Bavarias in particular.
