I've known of people living in shops in the light industrial areas since the early 70's. Some pretty colorful if not very productive. Those were some good times as I had such a space that I shared. Total rent was $90/mo utilities paid, not some triple net lease.
We had a couch and 55 gal drum fireplace. Try that now. Never met the landlord. I could have stayed overnight a few times, don't remember. I probably didn't remember those nights then either.
