To follow-up:
The kid came home for mother's day, so I was able to look at the car.
Whatever it is, someone pushed the OBDII port out and plugged something onto the OBD plug. Then ran that device to the underside of the dash. I suspect it's Lojack but not certain. At any rate, I unplugged the device and was able to check the code. Problem solved.
