Glen, what color was your ‘60 beetle? Mine was Arktis Blau until I ran the left front fender into a guardrail while testing out some new Michelin Xs. Then it was Blau and primer gray.
The gas pedal was an ON/OFF switch. It was either full power (such as it was) or no power. Paid $600 for it and sold it for the same amount after taking the Xs off and putting them on my new, powerful, 40hp ‘63.
