Schmidt was not qualified to be the DA. He was a prosecutor for only a few years after graduating from law school, only handled misdemeanor property crime and drug cases. Then he went to various political positions in the state Legislature, before running for DA. As DA, he apparently had a real problem with women, didn’t put any female prosecutors in senior leadership positions, drove a whole bunch of female prosecutors out - and these included veteran prosecutors with vastly more experience and skill than him. Those facts alone merited his removal, in my opinion. Then add his philosophy on the criminal justice system, and he was toast the moment his deputy stepped up to challenge him.
