Thanks for the ideas.
On the slight chance the BH/Adaptor plate alignment might have been off a mm or so, I loosened the other three bolts then tried again. This time the encourager was able to get it to snug in and the nuts drew it in tight. It's also 15 degrees cooler today, so who knows?
