Yeah, Porsche did move it back and forth over the years. I much prefer the rear mounted location, like on my '72. It's kind of up behind the left sway bar mount. Much more accessible and easier to route the many fuel lines without kinking and crimping them than it is on the front mounted setup. Easier to access for maintenance as well.
When we built my younger son's '68 912 into a 911 with the 2.4 out of my '72, we were faced with the dilemma of mounting the electric pump, since 912's don't have one at all. We simply mounted it to the left rear torsion bar tube with big hose clamps and some rubber padding. It's worked flawlessly for almost 20 years.
If you are not worried about authenticity, I would recommend the rear mounted location. It's just easier. Not correct for your car, but easier.
