Exactly the same, permit/DL on 15/16th birthday. I still remember taking the test in my mom's 1974 VW Super Beetle w 4-speed manual. My stepdad had a '66 Chevelle, my mom had the bug and my dad had a '74 E-type roadster. We did not have an automatic transmission car in the family at that time!
I remember taking DE in HS when I was 15, my driving instructor was also one of my teachers, Mr. Burnett. He was this cool young black guy, after a couple of blocks, he goes, "aw man, you can drive," and rolled down the window and lit up a cigarette. This was in 1974, mind you. We just cruised around, he gave me no instructions and passed me for the driving part of the class.
I'm sure that it was more stressful to teach most of the kids who had never actually piloted a car before. My mom used to sit me on her lap and let me steer her '63 Ford Falcon wagon when I was about 6 years old, driving was just in my blood. I wonder if public schools even still have driver's ed? It's strange that a lot of kids don't care about driving anymore...nearly everyone got their license at 16 when I was a kid. Not just the obsessed gear heads like you and me.
