If they can yes. I resisted for years until a friend of mine and I went to the Prado in the early '90's and we hired a guide, which led to another city-wide guide based on his recommendation.
Changed my entire perspective....it is, in some cases, like having a docent on vacay.
That or, 1/2 day, take a tour bus with a guide....dweeb like but you get a sense of play in 1/2 a day and can hop off the bus when you are ready.
