Going back to the original poster's thought on rare vs valuable, aircooled 911's were made in adequate numbers for the market at the time but as time passes the market demand for such things has dramatically expanded while the supply has remained the same or declining as some are wrecked or lost. Thus the price of the remaining 911's (993's especially have been rising) due to low production numbers and demand. These cars aren't "rare" like the Hope Diamond, but scarce enough in the bigger world that makes them increasingly valuable. That they hold value at all is because certain auto enthusiasts hold them in a high position for excellent design and performance.
