I slather on sun block, and I wear a large floppy hat.
The real problem is when I was in first and second grade in Hawaii, I went to school and everywhere with no shirt, no shoes or hat. I was so tanned I could be outside all day, and not get sunburned. There was no such thing as sunscreen. My feet were like elephant feet. I could walk across black asphalt in the full sun and not feel a thing. Stepping on a sand-bur or sticker, I just scraped my foot on the ground to get it out. Now I am paying for that.
I always wear shoes. House shoes inside, and real shoes outside. My feet are un-callused and as tough as newspaper. I never go outside without a hat and wearing a shirt (and jeans or shorts) but it is too late to undo the damage. It is part of getting older. I will never be too old to have a happy childhood, and I still have a 8 years old kids sense of humor.
