GPH of overdriven yachts!
A few weeks ago I saw the Canadian navy’s Regina slip past at dusk at 29kts, moved like a cat.
So that’s a big boat going fast but it sure did move with dignity.
I seen some other boats go by, look like a shoe getting dragged through the water. Whole boat tipped back into the hole they make in the water and a giant frothy wave spilling forward of the bow.
I sort of laugh, what the heck is the guy thinking, is he channeling Rodney dangerfield? These are typically 45-55ft things that look like they’re stacked an extra deck taller than they should be, looking top heavy.
Today I saw something 80-90ft long going past. Three full decks so it looked like a wedding cake, all tilted making the most massive wake. Not planing though and not moving well I’d say overdriven, is there another word for that? Violating hull speed for sure at 25kts. The lower forward windows were enclosed in the bow thrash. Epic.
Looked up fuel economy for similar looking boats and apparently takes 1.5-2k hp, so over 200gph? To look like a doofus and save a few minutes?
Sure the wake was large but I’d no idea how crazy it was until I saw the estimated fuel use.
Do folks not know how boats are supposed to move in the water? Don’t they notice that everything is tipped back at a weird angle? Wont the fountain spill? Won’t all the books and glass art fall out onto the inlaid marble floor in the library?
Takes all kinds but this boater subset strikes me as deeply weird.
