On July , 1914, American physicist and inventor Robert H. Goddard (1882-1945) was awarded U.S. Patent No. 1,102,653 for a "rocket apparatus."

Goddard's patent covered a multi-stage rocket, which represented a milestone in the history of rocketry. Designed to loft scientific instruments to new heights, the concept also proved critical to the later development of launch vehicles for space flight. Goddard is considered the father of modern rocketry.
