We have two trash bins for trash, and rarely use the second one.
We also have a recycling bin that is green. It is for any cardboard and plastic and glass. It is only picked up once a month, the trash is picked up every week. All of our on-line purchases that arrive in in a box go in that bin.
All part of my water-trash-sewer bill and I can take hazardous household products like brake fluid, motor oil, paint, insecticides and pesticides, florescent bulbs and mercury vapor bulbs to them for free. I have to drive several miles to do that so it is a once per whenever trip.
It even includes a once every other month day to put out large objects that can't go in the bins. Fence panels, tree limbs, appliances, water heaters, lawn equipment, and gas grills.
Any aluminum cans go in our trash compactor in the garage, and get smashed into a cube. It is not worth the gas money to take that cube to the metal buyers. I give that to a nearby fire department for them to take to the recycling facilities.
