I know you say you understand the exchange rates but I don't think you're understanding in the context of THIS purchase.
You paid $40 US for a part but were charged in CANADAIN dollars.(It looks higher)
$40 US = $55 CAN
$15-$20 US shipping charge = $20-$27 CAN
$55 CAN + $20-27 CAN shipping = $75-$82 CANADIAN charge.
Your CC was charged in CAN dollars, not US. Hence the appearance of inflated cost
