Turns out it was "only" a 4.4 but centered in South Pasadena, so maybe 10 miles away. The amount of shaking you feel is of course a function of how big the quake is and how close you are to it. This was really close.

My butt Richter scale thought it was bigger, another factor is whether you are out moving around or driving as opposed to sitting still. When you are sitting quietly on the couch reading, as I was, you can feel and experience even a small quake that you would totally miss if you were driving. I feel lots of small tremors when still, sometimes I wonder if it's an inner ear issue or an actual quake. This one was not a wobbler...it moved my building pretty aggressively side-to-side.

When I was a kid, we lived in Japan. We felt a few decent sized quakes, but hundreds of tiny tremors. One of the bigger quake that occurred when I was there happened when I was riding in the car with my mom. I had no idea, but she noticed.
