on the other hand, buying as a PP here in Florida a new plate will set you back $175ish plus the sales tax on the declared price of the car. If you have an existing plate, then it is just sales tax on the declared price of the car.

Many years ago FL added some jacked up "new plate" charge of some sort to gouge the snow birds. It was taken to court and overturned. I think I got something like $350-375 as a refund several years after I left the state.
