I lived at the South Rim in 1995-96. The scale of the place is staggering and can't be captured in pictures. Having flown over the North Rim countless times I remember it being deserted - which is a good thing.
I'll always contend that best way to see the canyon is to hike down into it, get to the river if you're able. Even if you can only do a few hours hike half way down you will be greatly rewarded.
