I had similar challenges trying to get connected to a 1990s era Motec. I initially tried everything I could think of using a DOS emulator and a serial plug to USB adapter on a newer computer. I couldn't get the Motec to talk to the computer for the longest time. Eventually it did, but what I got out was gibberish. Turned out the Motec didn't support USB communication, so what I was doing was never going to work. Getting a 1990s computer running Win95 and having a serial port was the fix for me.

One thing that was helpful in figuring out the above was getting on a forum where older Motecs were discussed. If you don't find your answer here, see if you can find such a forum for old Haltechs.
