The only time I get something like that is if I try to extend it a REALLY long way out without being held. And I think all of mine would right themselves if twisted like that near the tip.
I'd only expect to see something wonky like that if the measure was twisted enough to get a permanent bend/crease in the tape.
What brand of tape measures are you using?
