First time you almost soiled yourself in a 930

up until the early 2000s while i was in late 20s i have never driven a 930 turbo. i have always been a 356 and a natural asperated 911 guy.

I came across a rode hard and put away wet 84 930 gray market car from Florida that i couldn't pass up.
The motor had lots of upgrades larger turbo andial ic 964 cams adjustable wastegate, a fuel management system. All stuff i knew nothing about. i would twist knobs not knowing what they did just to see if it made a difference later i found out it was for the bov and the waste gate and something to do with the fuel . According to the papers i got with the car it had a between 420 and 482hp pending knob position. so said the dyno sheets. and a stacks of papers and receipts as thick as a old school phone book.
after tinkering all summer setting up the suspension replacing the spring plates with fully adjustable ones. so i could corner balancing ( car had a slight crab walk from an incident prior to my ownership) replacing fuel lines and chasing electrical gremlins the usual stuff . The car became a really nice fair weather driver.

As summer ended and the north east cool fall mornings were here. I was getting ready to put the car away for the winter before the salt hit the roads not to mention the car had headers no heat .
One cool mid 40 deg morning heading into work just as the suns coming up . There is this long on ramp about 3/4 a mile long with a mild right hand curve and a slight crest just before you merge onto the 4 lane highway and its all wide open you can see everything in all directions. The type on onramp that just begs you to get on it and stay on it . So i did what i did 100s of times before with a regular 911 ( which was usually the high point of my day). but this time i had a turbo and a knob to twist and not another car insight ... so I spun the the boost knob all the way to the right and waited for the light to change . The light turned green and off i went. slamming through the gears pure bliss sucked back into my seat. By the time I'm at the end of the on ramp in 3rd gear and just prior to easing into 4th as i hit the slight crest where the ramp meets the highway, Where i usually ease off the gas and drive semi normal. The car went full boost , it went from pure bliss to pure panic. The rear of the car lost all its down force from the crest in the road and the cold tires didn't grip .tires broke loose i shot sideways across all 4 lanes of the highways at a 45deg angle going close to 100 miles an hour sideways. all 4 tires instantly liquified and smoke was everywhere, it was over just as quick as it started. I regained control just before kissing the guard rail on the opposite side of the highway .
I drove to work with white knuckles and flat spots on all 4 fires . later that next day i drove past the spot of the incident. 4 dark black skid marks in a cool twisted pattern at least a city block long. I drove for another week hoping the tires would round out, no such luck.
i went to get new tires and told the tire guy my story. He looked at me like was an idiot ( if the shoe fits right)
Then he proceeds to tell me the tires on the car we not DOT rated they were track tires and should not be used under 50 deg . who knew .. obviously i should have it was printed right on the tires. NOT FOR HIGHWAY USE
live and learn.,
This pucker memory was the single driving factor to upgrade the turbo on the the 76 I'm currently building to the evergreen k27 raptor it has a more gradual boost curve than the early stock turbos.
