That's always how I've bought them. Back in the day, I think I had 3, 4 or 6 ton jack stands. My reasoning was "buy more than you need and they are less likely to fail". Since most of the time, most jack stands are lifting 1000# or less (for an avg car), then having some rated for 6000# seems like a great safety margin. And that's one of those places where you want safety margin.
