Nowadays, I'd say it's more like following the herd rather than demonstrating any feelings of independence. Interesting how tattoos and piercings have spread so quickly to the most remote corners of the 'first' world too. And as John pointed out, they're no longer just seen on 'edgy' people either. Middle-aged housewives are now sporting major ink...and tats can be seen on people who 25-30 years ago would've never even considered such a thing. I wonder how those who got tattooed back when it really was a sign of independence feel now that the look has gone mainstream?
At least with some piercings, you can just remove the hardware when you outgrow the look, while those who get tattooed, especially at a relatively young age, have to live with their sometimes questionable choices for the rest of their lives.
