My first Beetle was a 69 and I had to drive it through a couple Michigan winters. The windshield defroster was useless...so I bought a 10" JC Whitney defroster bar that plugged into the lighter.
It would allow maybe a one inch strip to see out. Dangerous, but it worked.
Can't imagine doing something like that every day now.
