I ran a sewing machine repair shop out of the back of a hardware store and was taught by a master, the Lilly white is highly refined and has the perfect viscosity to properly lube the machines. It was common to have to use acetone to clean old machines caked with 3-1 oil, it gums over time. The real sewing machine oils keep the machines free from gum up.. just use air to blow out lint, one drop of oil from a small long neck dropper and your done. Those feather weights and others can actually burn out motors from gum up. Those phaff's are more like tanks than singers... never used auto oil to lube though.
