I do this as well for the tank oil. Mine is the vertical hand pump one that holds about 8 quarts. Then pull the plug to get the last half quart or so. Works great on the wife's car, boat, lawn mower etc. Clean easy way to manage oil, especially if its hot.
Another thing I like is when I take the oil to the recycle center it is already in a container that can be safely transported.
