The SWB cars have a more solid tube, as do 356s. My understanding is the flexible tube is essentially a muffler. Otherwise you get engine noise in the cabin (I experienced this on my '68 after I took the foam lining -- what serves as a muffler on those cars -- out of one of the tubes). So, I don't think you'd hurt anything by using solid tube, but I'm also not sure you'd gain a ton of stiffness, and you'd get more noise in the cabin unless you figured out a way to fashion a muffler inside the tubes.
You're doing a really great job, and a great job documenting it. Thanks for taking the time to share it!
