The structure of the brain that processes olfactory inputs is anatomically intertwined with the structure that outputs memories.
For me diesel exhaust elicits the happy memory of my first ownership of a tractor. The aroma of pine needles on the forest floor elicits the happy childhood memories of camping in the woods and sardines evoke…memories.
