My great uncle became a real miser in his later years. He would go to the butcher shop, buy some hamburger, set it on the counter, and fry some up and eat if off a flat plate. The next day, grab more burger from the counter, and fry it up, and just turn over the plate, and eat again. That went on until the burger was all gone.
He did not want to plug in the refrigerator, as it was expensive to run. I remember going over to his little house when I was a kid with my grandparents for a visit. Sitting on the try where he put his change, was a seated liberty quarter. I started drooling and looking at it closely. He sold it to me for a quarter. I still have it, and think of him when I see it.
He finally got senile enough to be put in a nursing home. He lived well into his late 80s. His immune system must have been battle hardened.
