At the workplace you just don't have the time to waste.
I once started a job with a new manager whose approach to me was to try to explain every situation and why something needed to be done. I appreciated his methodology but he was frequently interrupted by other demands upon his time. After about 15 minutes I said,"Bruce, can we pretend we've worked together for a few months? If you need me to do something, just tell me . If I need more information, I'll ask for it, but you don't have time to explain everything."
He thanked me and we got along great.
