Most fishing does not cost all that much if you are just trying to get a basic setup going. Freshwater cast/retrieve setup or basic bait (worm on a hook) setup including a Honda Civic level "no frills but not junk" rod, reel, line, terminal tackle will set you back maybe $200. It is a slippery slope from there... add a boat, more/better gear, destinations further afield, etc and you can end up spending "I own a track car" levels of cash. In the last 5 years I have spent "new Ferrari" money in the pursuit of fishing
As far as whether fishing for fun will be a good fit for you, I will tell you what I tell folks who are pondering going a bit further afield to see if the fishing might be better there than in their regular spot: "you won't know if you don't go."
This could be you!
