Corrosion increased resistance, which caused heating, which melted the connector. PO may have had a higher wattage bulb in there too. The spades on H5's are smaller than the previous headlights, which puts the current through a smaller physical contact, which increases the likelihood of a high-resistance contact.
Cut off the old connector and splice in a new one. Auto stores sell them, becuase yours ain't the first.
