Way back in 1977 I worked for California Parks at Leo Carrillo Beach and they had bought up all the small beach houses just to the south towards Trancas along PCH to create what would eventually become Matador, Pescador and La Piedra State beaches.
They weren't going to tear them down for months so they allowed some of the Park Rangers to live in them. Ranger Chuck who I worked with got one and it had a converted garage he let me use. I was 18 years old, a seasonal park maintenance worker and living right on the beach in Malibu. It was glorious.
But, all good things come to an end, seasonal workers were let go for the winter and I joined the Army.
I could see some of those damaged homes becoming another extension of the park system.
