That has me wondering if you could cut a hole/window in your tray that would give you the required access, and then make a door for that window out of some sheet metal or something. Probably a pain initially, but a time saver in the long run. But certainly won't be factory perfect any more.

I belong to a Civic SI forum and there are a few different varieties of engine pans for sale to replace the Honda one. Most are under $200...I might do that sometime.
The after market ones all have two doors (filter and drain)
