We get hummers all the time in our backyard. We used to have a lot of flowers, lavender and others that they'd feed on. Some are very territorial when it comes to allowing other hummers in to feed. They'll sit on the wire above the back fence and keep a look out for intruders. Once spotted they'll take off like a missile and chase the intruder off. I've been buzzed a number of times when tending to the bird bath.
