Dept of Educ is mostly a passthrough agency - in other words, it distributes federal funding to students (loans, grants), schools, special ed programs, school lunch programs, etc. The department's direct expenses (salaries and contractors) is only about $2.5BN. Meaning, eliminate the entire department's employees and contractors, and that saves about 0.04% (four one-hundredths of one percent) of total Federal spending.
To save more money, you have to cut federal funds to students and schools. Which I guess might happen, if there is no-one to distribute the money. About 11% of K-12 school budgets come from federal funds.
I expect some pretty significant layoffs in our local schools.
