The build up sequence is masterfully constructed. From the slow drive to the point of last year's crash, remembering the shock and the pain, through to the point where your adrenaline and nerves have peaked as a driver at the start of a race, but have calmed by the end of the first lap as you settle into a groove - thus the jazz music.

For such a thinly dialogued movie there is a lot said - that is Steve McQueen as an actor (or as Tuco said: "If you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk"). The trailer scene where he discusses his racers philosophy, that is autobiographical.

As a kid, this middle bit in the film was blah blah blah; as an adult its far more realistic and relatable.

And, of course, there is the end sequence. Who is going to win? Will our hero, who already failed again, save the day?

The typical overproduced movie today would. Not here. The hero fails. And waits to be alive again at the next event.

This movie is in the details, not the flash.
Well said.

I also noticed the tribute to David Piper for his sacrifice during the movie. Seems he had a bit of a wreck and was injured enough to warrant a below the knee leg amputation.
