Also, regarding the shrub planting on the outside, whenever you get to it, Indian Hawthorn is a very durable and low maintenance low in height shrub. They aren't known for their flowers but they do bloom in the spring.
Rhaphiolepsis indica (botanical name) or just Indian Hawthorn - in a 3 gallon size is what I usually use. Try to buy from a wholesale nursery. Retail pricing on plants is crazy right now!
There are of course other plant choices but if you want durability and don't want something that grows too high, this would be a good choice.
