Reminds me of a story I recently read: It showed the only real difference between the popular kids and the others were their number of friends. I had a similar epiphany beginning of my senior year of high school. I was quite the nerd in high school (I still am) but started making friends outside of my small nerd friend group and all of sudden I was a somewhat popular kid.
