Two factors in my experience, one was dealt with above. If you modify them for improved off road ability, you are compromising highway stability. The second is related to gearing. My BIL never drove his Jeep above 55mph. He said you could almost watch the gas guage drop at 60.
He bought it because he thought it was the vehicle he always wanted. Turns out his wants changed pretty quickly after he got it.
