I don't think so. My guess is that the person sends this chat, and then if the receiver has a good heart, they respond "I'm sorry. I'm not your dad, etc..." Then the scammer keeps chatting, builds a rapport and eventually has a sad story that then leads to money changing hands.

I believe in many cases they know if you've opened them (took the bait).

Nope, that's the source of the text, not my number.
I have my phone set to not send "read receipts" and don't click links in texts from folks that I don't know. I'm pretty careful about texts and emails.
