– August 17, 1945 – The Midwest City Douglas Aircraft Company Plant officially closed.
Beginning in March 1943 through August 1945, the Douglas plant constructed more than half of the 10,000 C-47 Skytrain U.S. Army cargo planes (nicknamed “Gooney Birds”) that were manufactured during World War II. Approximately 38,000 Oklahomans worked at the Douglas plant, and more than half were women!
