In 1980, I had to review a Shakespeare play for my college theater class. As luck would have it, the king of the rep theaters in the U.S. is in Minneapolis, where I grew up and attended the U of M. That would be The Guthrie. The play that was running that month was, "As You Like it," one of WS's lighter works.
The two lead actors were Val Kilmer and Patti LuPone. Kilmer was completely unknown and I only realized years later that it had been him that I had seen and reviewed. LuPone, while not a household name in film and TV, is a massive star of the stage on Broadway, the West End in London, etc.
Years later, maybe 10-15 years ago, I sat with him and several other people at a table in a diner after a music show. I regret that I did not try to chat him up or tell him the Guthrie story, I was engrossed in conversation with someone else and as I remember, he just sat pretty quietly sort of smiling throughout. Listening to the conversation but not really participating. I think that he was sort of a fanboy for the musicians present...actors idolize music people for some reason.
