Ah, the correct spelling is either "Poofter" or "Poofta" (short "a" sound), depending on how you want it to sound. Imagine a few drunken Australian Cricket fans screaming:
"You're a bloody poofta, mate!" at unassuming tourists in a bar somewhere and you get the picture. I know, it's funny but very embarassing at the same time. I should worry that when that word comes up, 94.6% of Pelicans associate it's origin and use with my countrymen.
"Poofter" isn't necessarily always used to shame someone for their sexual preference. It's also often used as a term of endearment.
