Anyone who has taken classes in armed self defense has (hopefully) learned of the perils of being the guy (or gal) with the gun when the cops arrive. While your mother may love you and knows you would never hurt a fly, the cops have no idea who in the hell you are or what just happened. Don't be the only person still standing, with a gun in your hand, when they arrive.

And Denis is spot on - if there is something going down in your neighborhood, your place is inside your own home. Especially when the cops start showing up. If you are outside, don't think for a moment that they will know that it is your house, or that you belong there, or anything at all like that. They will have no idea. Sometimes not even if you are inside of it, but that's a story for another day.
